quail3dQuail are small birds that mostly live on the ground. They are considered to be game birds and some species are hunted by people for food.

Types of Quail: There are two major families of quail, New World Quail and Old World Quail. In total, there are about 43 types of quail found throughout the world.

Geographic Range: New World Quail are found in North and South America, from Canada down to Brazil. Old World Quail are found in other parts of the world including Europe, Asia and Africa.

Length: Adult quail are from 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30.5 cm) in length.

Wings: Most quail are terrestrial meaning that they live most of their lives on the ground, flying only to escape predators or to find a better place to view their surroundings. Only three types of Old World quail migrate with the seasons.

Weight: Adult quail weigh from 3 to 6.5 oz ( 90 – 184 g ). The females are often larger than the males.

Food: Quail eat seeds, insects, plants and sometimes roots.
